52 Ancestors: Belle Maud Fleharty (1872-1957)

Amy Johnson Crow suggested a weekly blog theme of “52 Ancestors” in her blog post Challenge:  52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks on the No Story Too Small blog.  I am posting my ancestors, one week at a time.

[I currently have no photo for Belle, but it’s on my list of photos to search for. I also don’t have a photo of where she is buried but I believe she’s buried at Forest Lawn with her husband James Clark in California.]

Belle Maud Fleharty (1872-1957) is #11 on my Ahntenafel list. She is my great-grandmother on my paternal line.

I was born after Belle died in 1957, so I don’t have any knowledge of her other than stories I have heard and my research. I have always been told that she was “mean”.  After researching her background, I have believe she had every reason to be.

Belle Maud Fleharty, “Mom Belle”, had a wonderful early childhood. She was born Belle Maud Fleharty on 17 Oct 1872 in Galesburg, Knox County, Illinois. However, she lost both her father and mother before she was 9. Her father, William Lane Fleharty, was a grocer, but his business failed, later he owned a nursery. At the age of 3, when her mother was pregnant with her younger sister, Vinnie, her father, died at 46 of a burst appendix. He survived for a month, before succumbing, dying in bed, at home. Her mother, Elizabeth Ann Terrell, continued on for five years on her own, with her young children but died at 45 of stomach cancer. Their older children Stephen Fleharty and William Fleharty, took on the responsibility for their younger siblings, raising them with their own children to adulthood.  The Fleharty’s were predominately Methodists.

Belle attended college at Lombard University and met her future husband there. He was the Vice-Regent of the Sigma Nu Fraternity, Chapter Delta Theta and theology later a student at Ryder Divinity School.  She was a member of Alpha Xi Delta. They named their two older daughters Delta Sigma and Theda G. They were married in 1896 and moved from Illinois to Wisconsin where he was a Universalist Pastor. Later they moved to California and were homeowners in Pasadena, California. In 1911, Belle lost the love of her life. He was a mason and while building a wall, it fell on him. She was left with five children to raise, which she did by cleaning other people’s homes and taking in sewing. She maintained ownership of the home throughout the rest of her life, renting out a cottage in the back to make ends meet.
